Oprah Winfrey has created a buzz with her recent appearance at the bash of an Indian socialite, where she sported the nine-yard Indian wonder of a sari. The media mogul was in India to attend a high-profile party organized by Parmeshwar Godrej, at which she was the guest of honor.
Before attending the party, Oprah visited the residence of the Bachchans, a famous Bollywood family, with whom she is good friends. She apparently dropped by to pay a visit to the latest entry in the family, the newly born daughter of former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, and her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan, son of famous Bollywood actor, Amitabh Bachchan.
Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai were spurred to worldwide fame as they appeared on the famous Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009. In the famous episode, Aishwarya helped Oprah to drape an impromptu sari, much to the delight of the fervent audience.
It seems that the short lesson came in handy for Oprah when she actually had to wear a sari on the aforementioned bash. The bright orange sari with a fuchsia border that Oprah wore, was designed exclusively for her, by ace Indian designer Tarun Tahiliani.
Tarun, who has previously designed saris for famous Hollywood personalities like Liz Hurley and Lady Gaga, said that he was delighted at the opportunity to design one for Oprah. Oprah’s sari was made of Kanjivaram silk, and had a wonderful ethnic look to it.
It was embellished with lush silk brocade, and antique gota and zaridari embroidery, all of which amounted to a spectacular look for the diva. The intricate antique studs on the blouse and the sari gave it a rich look. Tarun made it easy for Oprah to wear by making it like a skirt that could be simply slipped on.
He explains that he had designed the sari keeping her voluptuous frame in mind, which is why the blouse was deep-cut to accentuate her assets, and the sari was strategically draped to ensure that her midriff remained covered. We must say that he did a brilliant job at designing the outfit, and so did Oprah, at wearing it gracefully, almost as if she had been wearing saris all her life!
